Styrax tonkinensis
Benzoin is an ancient essential oil made from tree resin. It is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, used to soothe and regenerate skin, heal wounds, and tighten/tone skin due to its astringent quality. It helps clear mucus, ease breathing (used for asthma, croup, cough, laryngitis, respiratory congestion), and supports blood flow.
It is used for gout, swelling, cuts, bleeding, skin ulcers, bedsores, arthritis, dry/cracked skin, swollen gums, herpes cankers, fluid retention, psoriasis, frostbite, and acne.
The oil is euphoric, invites stillness, and warms the emotions. Its calming properties also ease anxiety and promote sleep. It helps release deeply held beliefs and repressed emotions, aiding expression (voice, writing) and is great for writer's block.
Culturally, it was revered as the "Frankincense of Sumatra" and traded alongside Frankincense and Myrrh. Spiritually, it was burned to purify space and mark life transitions.
It is thick, has a scent often used as a vanilla substitute, and can be skin sensitive.
